Updating all of your devices is important, manufacturers are constantly refining and improving their products by providing free software upgrades throughout the life of the device, none is better at doing this than Apple and with the Mac. With macOS, models from mid-2010 are still being supported on the latest software and they still run well.

While updating your software to get the latest features may be one of the reasons, security is one of the biggest reasons to update your phone, computer or tablet software and in this guide we’re going to go over how to update your Apple Mac to the latest version of macOS using the Mac App Store.

Method 1 – How to update the current version of macOS

First, click the  in the top left of the screen and select “App Store”, if you already have some updates pending it will then show 1 or 2 updates next to it.
This will then open the Mac App Store
At the top of the screen, if you click updates then this will list the updates you have available
Over on the right hand side, you can either click ‘Update All” which will update all the below available updates there are, or individually click “Update” for each individual one.

Method 2 – How to update to the next version of macOS

If you are stuck behind on an older release of macOS, Apple does release new free updates every year. As of writing the current version of macOS is High Sierra 10.13.4. If you are on OS X Lion or later, you can update to High Sierra using the Mac App Store.

First, click the  in the top left of the screen and select “App Store”
This should then open the “Featured” tab
Over on the right hand side, you should see the “Quick Links’ section, if you click the ‘macOS High Sierra” link
You will then see the main page for macOS High Sierra
On the main banner, if you click “Download” or ‘Update” and it will download the new update, then walk you through the installation
