Apple acquired Dark Sky over two years ago and the wind down process of it being merged into the Apple Weather app has been a relatively slow one. Apple has basically finished the process this year with the release of iOS 16, macOS 13 and iPadOS 16. Last year Apple majorly overhauled the Weather app last year with iOS 15 and now it seems the process is now finished.

Shortly after being acquired by Apple, Dark Sky shut down the Android app in August 2020 and any new API applications were stopped. At the time, the company said it had no plans to remove the iOS Dark Sky app.

“Support for the Dark Sky app will be ending on January 1st, 2023. Dark Sky’s forecast technology will be integrated into the Apple Weather app with ‌iOS 16‌ this fall.”

However, fast forward to 2022 and Apple has reimagined the Weather app as well as bringing it to more platforms, including the iPad for the first time. The official Dark Sky app will be removed from the App Store on 1st January 2023. The API for Dark Sky will also be removed on 31st March 2023.

The popular Dark Sky website will also remain functional until 31st March 2023.
