At the end of last month, Tapbots the developer behind the popular Twitter client Tweetbot launched a brand new app for iOS called Ivory. The new app has been in early development since November 2022 and is a client for Mastodon. Mastodon started to gain popularity shortly after Elon Musk took over Twitter late last year. As of writing, Mastodon has 9.3 million users with many, many servers set up by people in the community already.
In January 2023, Twitter made the rushed decision to ban all third-party Twitter apps, by pulling the rug on the API access and not responding to any questions from the press or even the developers who had contacts at the company. As soon as this was realised, Tapbots decided to launch Ivory on the iOS app store as you see it today, with a clear and published roadmap about what is coming soon for the app.
Ivory supports a customisable tap bar with a familiar feel for any users who have used Tweetbot in the past. There are numerous themes, app icons and much more. Support for an improved navigation bar, post editing, profile editing and much more are coming in the future.
Like Tweetbot, Tapbots will be charging for Ivory to help the upkeep of the app. The app is free to download, however all features can be unlocked by paying $1.99 per month or $14.99 per year. Here in the UK, that translates to £1.99 per month or £14.99 per month. There is a Premier plan for £24.99 – but exactly what this does is yet to be revealed.
