Microsoft is killing off Internet Explorer in 2022

Microsoft is planning on finally killing off Internet Explorer next summer, and this move has been a long time coming, as Microsoft introduced its successor, Edge alongside Windows 10 back in 2015. Since then, Microsoft has been slowly building up the feature set of its new browser in preparation to retire IE.

Microsoft still bundles IE with current versions of Windows 10 and come 15th June 2022, it won’t be included anymore. However, no one really uses Internet Explorer anymore so why has Microsoft been included it for so long since, well some specialist equipment such as MRI machines, air traffic control systems and some older telecoms microwave links. For these applications, Microsoft will be keeping Internet Explorer 11 included in the Windows 10 Long-Term Servicing Channel.

Once IE 11 has been removed from Windows 10 in June this year, what about those sites and applications which only seem to work on IE? Well, Edge now has a mode for running them in “Internet Explorer mode.” This mode will actually go away in 2029 Microsoft has said.
