Apple has now discontinued the iPod touch

Yesterday, Apple announced that after 21 years, the last iPod on sale has now be discontinued. The iPod touch was last updated back in May 2019 when it had a very light spec bump, receiving the A10 Fusion from the iPhone 7.

Ever since the first iPhone was introduced in 2007, the fate of the iPod was settled. The iPod helped a struggling company at the time get out of a hole and back to producing iconic products. Since the iPhone was launched, the amount of iPod models that the company released dwindled, the last time there was any big news was in 2012 when all the iPod models got refreshed, apart from the iPod Classic.

Since 2017 Apple has only had the iPod touch on sale and since then it has had a couple of light refreshes, mainly just updating the chip to keep up with current iOS demands. The iPod touch gets a bit of use as mobile POS systems in restaurants but apart from that it is pretty underused.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared. Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”

Greg Joswiak – Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing for Apple

Like it did when it discontinued the HomePod, Apple is still selling the iPod touch while stocks last. It’s available in Apple retail stores, its online store and via Apple Authorised Resellers.
