The figures for the UK car registrations in July 2026 were released a handful of days ago by the SMMT, and the story so far this year has been pretty similar. The top few places have been usually dominated by the Ford Puma, Jaecoo 7, Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai.

However, for the first time, the SMMT has released a separate list of the best selling electric vehicles, and its revealed some interesting results.

Renault 5

Unsurprisingly, the Renault 5 has been the most popular electric car in July 2026. The R5 combines a fantastic design with a very a reachable price tag. Combine that with some very attractive lease deals recently and it is easy to see why Renault has shifted so many units.

Kia EV3

At number two is the Kia EV3, a car that has been on sale since the end of 2024. It, like the Renault offers an extremely attractive package, with long warranty and impressive EV performance.

Jaecoo E5

At number three is a newcomer and it's the third time in July that Jaecoo has made an appearance. Last month, Jaecoo shifted 2,481 units of the Jaecoo 5, its smallest SUV on sale in the UK and an additional 1,291 units of the Jaecoo E5, its electric sister.

What the SMMT hasn't made clear, is whether or not it is classifying the Jaecoo 5 for both powertrains in the top models list, or if Jaecoo has sold 3,772 units of the J5 in total for July (ICE & BEV).

Wider car market

Elsewhere in the month, Skoda shifted 1,255 units of the Enyaq and 1,165 of the Elroq. What is notable though, is that within the EV sales for July, the only Chinese manufacturer to have one within the top 10 is Jaecoo.

Elsewhere, within the mix of fuel types for the July registrations, BEV is sitting at 27.5%, HEV at 13.2%, PHEV at 14.9%, petrol at 40.1% and diesel at 4.2%. The only two to have a decline in market share compared to July 2025 are petrol and diesel.
