EU proposes that all phone manufacturers use USB-C ports

EU proposes that all phone manufacturers use USB-C ports

The EU may start to require that phone manufacturers use only USB-C for wired charging, including cameras, tablets, headphones and more. The EU Commission has proposed that this change will reduce the sheer amount of e-waste we have an also reduce the consumer inconvenience, due to the different charging standards.

“With today’s proposal, USB-C will become the standard port for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld videogame consoles.”

EU Commission

Along with this new proposal, the EU has said that over the last decade, it has helped work with the industry as a whole to reduce the number of phone chargers used from 30, down to 3.

This change would affect Apple, as they use the Lightning connector on the iPhone and the lower end iPad, as well as AirPods Max, AirPods and some Beats products. Apple would either have to change those to USB-C or for the iPhone, move to wireless only charging – using MagSafe.
