Former HBO CEO signs new deal with Apple TV+ for five years

Richard Plepler used to be the CEO of US media company HBO, who under his time produced ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Big Little Lies’ – both of which were hit shows. Plepler left in February last year just around sixth months after HBO was acquired by AT&T, he was at HBO 27 years.

Now, last week the Plepler has signed a new five year deal with Apple to help produce new Apple TV+ content, under his new company Eden Productions which will produce new TV shows, films and documentaries exclusively for Apple’s streaming service.

The news was reported by The New York Times last week who when they spoke to Plepler, he said:

“It was instantaneously clear to me that I had a wonderful and very privileged run at HBO and I wasn’t going to be able to duplicate that again,” Mr. Plepler said in his first interview since leaving the network. “And I didn’t want to try to duplicate that again. It felt very clear to me that I just wanted to do my own thing.”

It may be a while before we see the fruits of this deal, but we should see some new content from Apple TV+ within a year or so, depending how quickly they get started.
