Google discontinues the Nest Protect smoke alarm

Originally launched back in 2013, the Nest Protect smoke alarm has now been discontinued. Google purchased the smart home company in 2014 and since then has kept Nest and its various products ticking along, with a few dropped here and there. The Nest Protect has long been one of the best connected smoke alarms on the market, even despite its lack of Apple HomeKit support for example.

At the same time, Google removed the Nest x Yale smart door lock from sale too.

Google shared the news last week via its Nest community forum and explained the reasoning behind discontinuing both products. The company explains that it has:

"been building a platform that all device makers and developers can use to spur innovation in the home. And, as the smart home evolves, we must continue to refine our portfolio of devices to meet the needs of our customers."

Google stresses that existing customers and Nest Protect owners will not see any loss of service and all existing devices will continue to operate normally. Google also reminds that all smoke & CO alarms have expiry dates and the Nest Protect is no different. It'll also continue to receive support and software updates too.

Regarding the Nest x Yale door lock, this was launched in 2018 and has also been discontinued too. Like the Nest Protect, Google will continue to support it with software updates going forward.

As for the Nest app, Google is looking to transition users to the Google Home app. Nest Protects can currently only be managed in the Nest app, with new smoke sensor support coming soon and this is also the case for the door lock too.

Going forward, Google and Yale are working on a new door lock which will come this summer. It'll have the same design aesthetic as the Nest doorbell products and will support Matter.

As for the Nest Protect, again Google is partnering with another company called First Alert. The new alarm will launch in the US and Canada later this year for $129.

The Nest Protect is still being sold, but only while stock lasts.
