iPadOS 16 announced at WWDC 2022

At WWDC 2022 this week, Apple revealed iPadOS 16. Like usual, iOS and iPadOS are very similar with the releases, but the iPad does have some unique features this year, such as a revamped multitasking experience with Stage Manager and after 12 years of the iPad, the Weather app makes its debut.

Messages

With the Messages app, Apple is adding some much requested features, such as the ability to edit and unsend iMessages the have already been sent. Users can also mark iMessage conversation threads as unread. SharePlay will also work with Messages, removing the need to be in a call with everyone at the same time.

Home

The Home app on macOS, iOS and iPadOS has been completely redesigned, with a new way to view your whole home, with categories such as climate, security, and more. The cameras are also more accessible and Apple says the entire app has been rebuilt to be more reliable, especially for large deployments.

Mail

The Mail app on macOS, iOS and iPadOS has been given some love with the ability to cancel the send of an email as well as scheduling emails, so they can be sent at a more suitable time for the recipient.

iCloud Shared Photo Library

This gives the whole family access to a dedicated, shared library that can be worked on, edited by up to six family members. Photos can be added from the camera app to this album.

Stage Manager

Stage Manager allows the editing of apps and windows, with overlapping apps. However, the is only available on the on the iPad Pro and iPad Air with the M1 chip. However, ninth iPads will support support external screens up to 6K in resolution.

Weather app

After 12 years of the iPad, the Weather app makes its debut. The app has been scaled for the size with maps and more as well as severe weather alerts.

iPadOS 16 is available now for registered developers, with a public beta coming in July. Based on previous years, iPadOS 16 will come to the general public later this year.
