The new Volkswagen Golf for 2020 is now open for order, but only in a few entry level versions at this time, with the Golf Life and the Golf Style. The entry level version starts at £23,875.

The new eighth generation Volkswagen Golf was announced back in October and has already been on sale in Germany since December, but as of yesterday the order books have opened up for the UK market. The new car is obviously replacing the outgoing Mk7 car and it brings in a few changes and adjustments to the engine choice in the range too.

The new Golf is as near as makes no difference – the same dimensions as the old car, the wheelbase is identical but the length, width and height are all under 1-inch larger, which is not noticeable. The most different thing about the new car is the front headlights, which have been redesigned to be slimmer. Like the new up! which was released earlier this year, the new Golf also sports the new VW logo.

Also new are the engine choices, mild hybrids are bridging the gap between full electric and combustion only at the moment and the new Golf has the choice of a 1-litre three cylinder petrol, two mild hybrid engines in 1-litre and 1.5-litre variants. Later this year bigger engines will be launch as well as the infamous GTI and R models as well as GTE and GTD versions.

Volkswagen is also launching some natural gas versions, badged as TGI – but these won’t be coming to the UK, only the rest of Europe will see those versions.

The e-Golf version has now been dropped from the range, as the upcoming and bespoke ID.3 will be taking the place of a Golf sized electric car and besides, the ID.3 has been custom designed to be a full electric car.

Golf Life

With the entry-level Golf Life, you get 16-inch alloy wheel as standard, automatic LED headlights, parking sensors on the front and rear, ambient lighting, keyless start and all Golf models get a 10-inch instrument digital display as well as a large 10-inch infotainment system which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Wireless phone charging is standard, as is Volkswagen’s new ‘Car2X’ which is a interconnected system to allow the car to get information about traffic and other updates.

“communicates wirelessly with other Car2X enabled vehicles on the road to provide you with the most up to date traffic information. When you’re stuck in heavy traffic, it uses the information it receives to detect when the end of the jam is coming up and readies the car’s Adaptive Cruise Control.”

The Ambient lighting system is also customisable from the infotainment screen, with up to ten different colour choices.

Golf Life starts at £23,875 which comes with a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with 128bhp and a six speed gearbox. There is also a 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with 147bhp and a six speed gearbox to choose from, which brings the price up to £24,475.

The other engine choice is a diesel, which is a 2.0-litre and has 113bhp, paired to a six speed gearbox. This version starts at £24,875.

Golf Style

The new Golf Style has all the same standard features as the entry level Golf Life, it just adds larger 17-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, better seats and upholstery, wood trim inserts and climate control with three zones.

Golf Syle starts at £25,470 and comes with the same 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with 128bhp and six speed gearbox as the Golf Life, the 147bhp TSI engine is available too, which brings the price up to £26,090 as is the 113bhp TDI which is £26,470 but a more powerful diesel engine is an option only on the Style and is a 2.0-litre TDI, with 147bhp but has a 7-speed DSG and is £29,170.
