Android Wear on iOS doesn’t work with HealthKit

Android Wear on iOS doesn’t work with HealthKit

Yesterday we reported that Android Wear is now compatible with iPhone, which is great news as the devices that they sell are very good with a wide array of models to choose from. However, as Apple actually make the Apple Watch themselves they can allow it to have certain features that otherwise wouldn’t be available to third-party manufacturers such as answering phone calls, responding to iMessages. Something we have learned today is that when using a Android Wear smartwatch – the steps and other data doesn’t synchronise to the Health app on iOS. Instead is uses Google Fit.

Although Google Fit is a very good system with similar features to using the Apple Watch such as setting fitness goals, tracking steps and tracking your heart rate. BuzzFeed originally found this out today that Google made the decision to not support HealthKit.

“That said, Android Wear on iOS absolutely supports the mass majority of Wear features we see our Android users using and loving,” – a Google spokesperson told BuzzFeed

Why Google did this is actually pretty simple. When users put data into Apple’s Health app, no one has access to it apart from you and Google doesnt operate in this way so putting the data into Google Fit confies to the business model of the company: tracking users data and using it to help sell adverts.

As reported in the post yesterday, so far only one model of Android Wear watch is compatible with iOS, the LG Urbane but more devices are coming soon from Motorola, Huawei and Asus. It requires a iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8.2 or later.
