Apple’s iWork suite, GarageBand and iMovie were made free for all users yesterday, previously it was required to purchase a new iPhone, iPad or Mac to be eligible for the software free of charge. This change came into play at the end of 2013 but some users who are still using older hardware were required to purchase the apps.

What is iWork and iLife?

iWork and iLife are really what Apple used to call the software groups. The iWork branding is still used now and again, however  the iLife name hasn’t been used in a while since iPhoto was discontinued as it used to contain iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand and iTunes. Since then the Photos app has replaced iPhoto and iTunes is now bundled with macOS.

However Apple still makes iMovie and GarageBand for iOS and macOS and these apps are now free.

iWork on iCloud

Also for a a few years now, Apple has offered slightly less feature rich versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote for use on iCloud.com which PC and Mac users can use.

iWork, iMovie and GarageBand are available for free now on the App Store and Mac App Store.
