This week, it has been revealed that the second most popular type of car, for new sales at leat are fully electric vehicles. So far this year, a total of 175,614 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have now been registered which is up by 40.3% compared to the same time period in 2021. In comparison with the most popular type of new car, petrol – this is pretty far behind. 350,185 petrol cars have been registered so far in 2022.

There were some other shifts, plug-in electric vehicles and diesel sales were down too compared to last year. This is pretty much expected, as consumers are likely more confident with fully electric vehicles and their ranges. As for diesel, many manufactures have dropped diesel engines from popular models.

Diesel sales daw a drop of 43% compared with the first nine months of 2021. Plug-in electric vehicles registrations were down by 11.5%, when compared to September 2021.

In terms of what types of vehicles are popular, the UK buying public still tend to prefer larger vehicles. The ever popular Nissan Qashqai and new Tesla Model Y saw high figures of registrations last month. However, the Vauxhall Corsa has been the most popular car in the UK this year.
