Starting today, Twitter has updated its policy with regard to public figures being verified. It is pretty much common knowledge by now that Elon Musk has been changing Twitter a lot since he took the company over only a week or so ago.
One of the main changes was to how verification works, in the past public figures, journalists and celebrities were given a blue badge in order to verify who they were. However, with Twitter Blue, those same blue badges will be handed out to anyone who pays $7.99 per month for the subscription. Naturally, this brought up some questions, such as what would happen to people who impersonate and for brands who offer support on the social media platform.
Starting today, Twitter has been rolling out a new kind of checkmark for users and brands, one that isn’t available for purchase. The new ‘Official’ checkmark appears below the users name in tweets and on the profile page. The news was revealed today by Twitter product executive Esther Crawford.

She mentioned that this isn’t available for purchase and will be rolling out to users over time. She also goes on to say:
“Not all previously verified accounts will get the ‘Official’ label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.”
The new revamped ‘Official’ tag will help people determine if an account is actually genuine and not just subscribed to Twitter Blue.
