Bluesky is adding a new verification process for users and companies

Bluesky blue tick

Bluesky, the alternative social media network to X, formally Twitter - is starting to roll out its own blue tick veriication system, which seems to work in a similar fashion to the previous implementation that X had before Elon Musk took the company over.

Bluesky has had a domain based verification system in place, which requires a TXT DNS record to be added to the associated domain to enable some level of authentication, but this is open to some level of impersonation.

What we’ve launched today is the first step for how we’re going to evolve verification. The initial set of trusted verifiers includes news orgs who’ve agreed to take on the task of verification for their journalists. In the future, this set will expand, as well as how apps can choose to use them.

Going forward, Bluesky will move to use a blue checkmark based system with two different designs. The smooth round design will be for verified users and the one with rough edges will be for "trusted organisations" who can then approve other users.

To start with, Bluesky willl not accept any direct applications for its verfication process. Instead, the company is encouraging users and organisations to use the custom domain feature and then, later on down the line Blueksy will launch a request form so accounts and companies can request to become verified too.
