Apple has now made the Afterburner Card for the Mac Pro available for separate purchase

Earlier this week, along with all the other announcements from Apple, such as the new iPad Pro and keyboard, Mac mini updates and new MacBook Air – Apple also made the Afterburner Card available as a separate purchase for the new Mac Pro. Until this was made available, customers could only get the card at the same time as ordering a new Mac Pro from apple.com.

Apple has the Afterburner Card up for purchase on apple.com for £2,000 in the UK and $2,000 in the US.

The Afterburner Card is a custom PCIe card designed by Apple, specifically for the new Mac Pro and its sole purpose is to accelerate the performance when using Apple ProRes formats. Apple ProRes gets used in Final Cut Pro X and QuickTime Player X – and other applications too.

“Created to transform the workflow for film and video professionals, Afterburner accelerates ProRes and ProRes RAW video codecs in Final Cut Pro X, QuickTime Player X, and supported third-party applications. A PCI Express card exclusively for Mac Pro, Afterburner can be installed in any full-length slot, but it delivers maximum capability in a PCIe x16 slot.”
