Aston Martin is taking on Tesla, with a planned 800bhp electric Rapide

Tesla can’t just reap the benefits from high-end, fast electric cars now can it – what about some healthy competition? That is exactly what we are getting in the form of Aston Martin, the UK based sports car firm is now planning on taking on Tesla with an 800bhp electric version of the Rapide, which will have four wheel drive and a 200 mil range. This model will be initially competing with the Tesla Model S which costs around £75,000 and can do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, but instead of solely having an electric motor it also includes a small engine.

Andy Palmer, the CEO of Aston Martin has recently spoken to Automotive News while at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance which has revealed that production for the new car should get started in the next two years. Also another model called the DBX is also planned for release, which will be a SUV/crossover car. Also Palmer said that the electric Aston Martin Rapide would be $200,000 to $250,000 or £128,000 to £160,000.

“If you want to keep making V12 engines, then you’ve got to do something at the opposite end of the spectrum.” – Palmer

Aston Martin did make a step to reduce the overall emissions as a company as few years back with the small city car the Cygnet but now the company is playing catch up with the new electric models coming soon.
