As time goes on, diesel is becoming less and less popular. Over the last few years, countless manufacturers have been removing diesel options and the next victims are the Audi S4 and Audi S5 . Both models have not sold in any great quantities, with just 198 units of the S4 and S4 Avant being sold in 2023 alone. For the whole of 2022, Audi only sold 137 S4 cars.

The S4 and S5 have been diesel only since 2019 and when A4 and A5 are refreshed in 2024, it is unclear whether or not Audi will be using the same 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine again. This might be unlikely due to how the market is moving away from diesel. Rival, BMW has removed all diesel versions of the 4-Series. This could mean Audi might return to offering a petrol option for the S4 and S5, or some sort of hybrid setup.

As mentioned, the popularity of diesel powered cars has been been dwindling recently, with petrol and BEV cars taking up the rest. In 2017, diesels made up 37.8% of the market and for 2022, this has fallen to 5.1%. In comparison, EVs made up 16.6% of new car sales.
