X competitor, Bluesky now has 15 million users

This week, there has been a flood of new users joining Bluesky, with over one million new users in just one week alone. This has also coincided with an apparent wave of users leaving X (Formally Twitter). Bluesky has been going for a little while now, being launched as a waiting list in 2022 and then becoming publicly available in February 2024, prior to then it was invitation only.

However, with recent events on X in the last few days, which could be attributed to frustration with Elon Musk and X in general since the US presidential election. Bluesky seems to have been leaning into this too, with the company posting a bit more than usual on X, as well as Threads. In recent days, "Bluesky" has been trending on both platforms.

Rose Wang shared a video update on Bluesky yesterday explaining what the social network is for new users:

“You're probably used to being trapped in a single algorithm controlled by a small group of people, that's no longer the case. On Bluesky, there are about 50,000 different feeds and these feeds provide a cozy corner for you to meet people with similar interests. And you can actually make friends again, because you're no longer tied to a dominant algorithm that promotes either the most polarizing posts and or the biggest brands, and that's the mandate of Bluesky.”

The moble app for iOS is also now sitting at the top of the App Store chats for all free apps in the UK, above ChatGPT, Threads and Tickermaster. SimilarWeb, a web analytics company as also published some data surrounding the amount of people who have deactivated their X accounts. It shows that 281,000 users deactivated their accounts on 6th November 2024 and back in November 2022, 200,000 people deactivated their accounts, which correlates to when Elon Musk took ownership of the company.

Our take

I'm happy to post content and mix with other likeminded people on most social networks.  However, I and the interface won't be leaving X and will continue to post on it as well as Bluesky, Mastodon, Linkedin and any other new social media platforms.
