The latest published data from the SMMT shows a surge in demand for used EVs year on year. Whilst we still wait for Q4 2025 data to be published, the year-on-year growth has risen by 46.5% showing a strong demand for used EVs.
The situation is similar for hybrid vehicles too, showing a 29.8% increase in demand year-on-year and plug-in hybrids increasing by a more modest 7.9% year on year.
According to AutoTrader’s own data, used EV sales were the “fastest-selling fuel type, taking just 30 days to sell on average in December; and sales increased c. 52% in 2025.”
Invariably as more segments are filled by electric cars and more choice is available, people are more likely to consider an electric car as their next purchase. According to the AA’s October 2025 report, used Ev’s are within 3% price parity with their petrol equivalent, making them a more attractive purchase on the used market, but they also highlight concerns about the price of public rapid charging which may slow adoption rates for some.
In the AA’s January 2026 report, it showed consumer confidence about roadside repairs for EVs was low despite the AA confirming that EVs are more repairable on the roadside vs internal combustion engines with 12v battery failure being cited as the largest percentage of breakdowns in petrol and diesel cars. The AA also noted that 81.6% of all rear workshops are now equated to deal with EV repairs.
The AA, with its large database of breakdown data, will run campaigns to better educate perception about EVs addressing peoples main concerns with facts, all of which will help with EV adoption rates. The AA has now joined Autotrader, ChargeUK, OZEV and SMMT to share these facts giving confidence to drivers by supporting The Facts Initiative.
