During the Facebook and WhatsApp outage, Telegram gained 70M new users

Telegram had some positive benefits from the six hour outage Facebook experienced earlier this week. The popular encrypted app supports cross device sync and other benefits, something WhatsApp doesn’t have yet, although they are working on cross device support. Telegram CEO said during the outage, his company saw around 70 million new users sign up, with little to no affect on the operations of the app for existing users.

In the US, iMessage is one of the most popular platforms for messaging, but in Europe, UK and India – WhatsApp is almost part of daily life, so it a lot more affect on users.

The outage on Monday affected Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus – all platforms owned and operated by Facebook Inc.
