Ford tells EV customers to stop using its free Tesla Supercharger adapters

In order to allow compatibility with the Tesla Supercharger network, Ford in the US was offering free NACS adapters for its EV customers. However, after months of no issues, Ford is now advising that customers do not use them and pretty soon, it'll be requiring that customers send back the existing adapter and they'll receive a replacement for free. The whole process of sending back and receiving a new one is completlry free of charge.

This news comes from a service note, found by InsideEVs and it outlines the issue in more detail.

"Ford does not recommend using the adapter initially supplied to you with any vehicle from this time on, and we will be sending you a replacement. Ford will supply a replacement adapter in the coming weeks and provide return instructions to send back your existing adapter – both at no cost. It is imperative that we receive all adapters affected to reduce the risk of potential vehicle damage."

Ford signed an EV charging agreement with Tesla back in May in 2023 and along with other companies, Ford will be transitioning to use the NACS connector, moving away from CCS. Other companies such as Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Nissan, Subaru and others have also pledged to use the NACS connector going forward. The adaptor provides a way for existing Ford EV users to be able to user the Tesla Supercharger network. Ford was originally only going to offer the adaptor for free for a limited time, originally going to expire in June 2024, but this has since been extended to September.

If you need any more information regarding this, Ford advises to phone its help line on 1 (800) 392‑3673.
