Chery has technically already been in the UK since 2024, with the Omoda and Jaecoo brands - which offer the popular Omoda 5, electric Omoda E5, Omoda 9 and Jaecoo J7. However, those two brands only exist outside of China and serve to help brand conquer the export markets.
These models are sold under the Chery brand in the company's home market and notably, the more premium Omoda 9 is actually sold as an Exeed in China, one of the company's more upmarket brands.
So this leads us back to Chery, which is the parent company of Omoda and Jaecoo. Chery itself is launching in the UK in a matter of weeks, with two new cars. One is the Tiggo 7 and the other is the Tiggo 8, with the latter being a large seven seat SUV.
The smallest of the two is the entry level Tiggo 7, which when it goes on sale in the UK will be priced from a very competitive, £24,995. In terms of size, it goes up against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, but is priced to rival more budget offerings, like the MG ZS.
The Tiggo 7 has to different powertrains, either pure petrol or plug-in-hybrid (PHEV). Disappointingly, a pure electric model is missing, despite sub-brand Jaecoo recently announcing the E5 EV SUV.
The combustion model comes with a 1.6-litre petrol engine making 145bhp and 203lb ft of torque. The more expensive PHEV model is priced at £29,995 and uses a 18.3kWh LFP battery in conjunction with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, to make 201bhp. It can achieve 56 miles of range under EV power only.
Chery has bold plans for the UK, with Lepas and iCaur to arrive soon.
