HomePod mini has some unused sensors for temperature and humidity

HomePod mini has some unused sensors for temperature and humidity

Apple launched the new HomePod at the tail end of last year and according to news today, from Bloomberg the HomePod mini looks to have more functionality hiding underneath than Apple originally advertised. Something that Apple did when the HomePod mini was announced, was advertise the functionality of the U1 ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, then add the functionally later on down the line via a software update.

On the teardown from iFixit, the company found a very small 1.5mm by 1.5mm chip on the logic board which is capable measuring temperature and humidity, but at the moment the chip is not activated or used. Apple could down the line decide to update the software on the HomePod mini to take readings and then share that data with other HomeKit accessories, without the need to purchase a separate device for reading the room environment.
