Kia revealed the first images of its brand new PV5 Cargo and PV5 Passenger this week and this marks its entrance into the world of commercial vehicles. The Hyundai Group, which encompasses Genesis, Hyundai and Kia - has long been at the forefront of EV technology. The group has had great successes with its E-GMP platform, which has spawned the likes of the Genesis GV60, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 to name a few.
What is clear though, is that the electric van market is lacking some innovation. Most of the vans on sale currently are built on modified combustion platforms and do suffer in a number of ways, namely with charging speed and range.
However, Kia looks to be taking things seriously. The PV5 is very likely going to be built on top of the existing E-GMP platform, which offers impressive efficiency, range and charging speeds.
We don't know what battery specs the PV5 will have, but the concept that was revealed last year had a front mounted electric motor, with a 800V architecture rather than 400V, much like the new Kia EV3. If it has the same specs as the EV3, that would be good news - as that car has the option of a 58.3kWh or 81.4kWh battery, offering up to 375 miles of WLTP range in the larger battery. However, due to the weight and payload requirements, this could be close to 300 miles in the PV5, which would still be extremely competitive.
In terms of design, the PV5 looks pretty striking, it has certain cues from the EV9 SUV, with bright daytime running lights, short bonnet and a front mounted charging socket.
Kia hasn't revealed much information about the PV5 just yet, but it will make its UK debut at the CV Show, which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham in April. Before that, Kia will reveal more information and specs at the Kia EV Day on the 27th February. Pricing is also not concrete yet, but Kia did mention in the past that it is targeting a price of €35,000, which if true will undercut the ID.Buzz Cargo and Ford E-Transit Custom significantly.
