Netflix will shut down its DVD rental service in September

Netflix has announced that after 25 years of offering DVD rentals, that side of the business is going to come to an end. Netflix first got started back in 1997 and shipped its first DVD to a customer in 1998 and has since then shipped 5.2 billion DVDs to over 40 million customers. However, times have changed and people aren’t renting movies on DVD anymore so Netflix is deciding to stop offering its DVD rentals on 29th September 2023.

Netflix has been running DVD.com since 2011 and has been streaming movies and TV shows online since 2007 and thats what people know Netflix do. The company has said it is becoming “increasingly difficult” to offer DVD rentals at the quality of service it wants.

Financially, Netflix isn’t doing to well at the moment. 2022 was a rough year for the company and the upcoming backlash over password sharing probably isn’t going to help things. It’s 2023 Q1 was still just as bad as it was in 2022 Q1. The killing off of its DVD rentals should help Netflix save some money where it likely isn’t making much at all.
