Škoda is working on a small electric car, will cost under £20k

This week, it has been reported that Škoda is working on a small electric car, similar in size to the existing Fabia. The upcoming car would cost under £20,000 and will ultimately replace the current Fabia model. Autocar spoke to Klaus Zellmer, the boss of Škoda who revealed the news.

This week Škoda revealed the all new Vision 7S concept car and Autocar spoke to Zellmer at the launch. Zellmer revealer that the Fabia would be replaced by a new all-electric model with the same or similar pricing. He went on to add that the biggest current challenge with electric vehicles is making the cost of the batteries sustainable.

Škoda is inside the Volkswagen Group and it is thought that the upcoming car would use the MEB platform, which is used on the Cupra Born and the Volkswagen ID.3.

UK car market

The car market desperately needs affordable, mass market electric cars. One of the cheapest new BEV cars on sale in the UK is the Volkswagen e-up!, which is still around the £20,000 mark. The other car set to come to the UK at some stage is the Dacia Spring from the Renault group. It’s a electric city car is one of the cheapest full sized electric cars on sale in Europe, at €89 a month in France with a purchase price of around £10,500 when converted to GBP. Range is 143 miles.
