Apple CEO, Tim Cook has this week announced that Apple will will soon purchase chips from TSMC that have been made in the United States. TSMC will start making chips at its factories in Arizona once they have been built, with a target to have them completed by 2026, with the first one opening in 2024.

Apple has been using TSMC for a long time to produce chips for the iPhone, iPad, Mac and other devices that use chips. TSMC pretty much only operates in Taiwan, but is looking to expand its operations – likely admits the issues and tensions between China, which still assumes it has control over the island. TSMC will be spending around $40 billon to build the two new factories.

Tim Cook spoke at the announcement event for TSMC in the US, which was also attended by U.S. President Joe Biden. Cook said:

“And now, thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips can be proudly stamped Made in America. This is an incredibly significant moment.”
