Ubiquiti announces its first 802.11ax (WiFi 6) UniFi APs

Ubiquiti announces its first 802.11ax (WiFi 6) UniFi APs

This week, Ubiquiti has releases its first two UniFi APs that support 802.11ax or WiFi 6 as it is most commonly referred too. The first two models are the UniFi 6 Long-Range and the UniFi 6 Lite and will be available soon as at the moment it says they will be up for pre-order starting on the 14th December. Pricing information is also not yet known, but it would be reasonable to expect a small price hike over the AC Lite and AC LR, so just over £100 for the Lite and about £150 for the LR might be what we are looking at when they are released.

UniFi 6 Lite

The UniFi 6 Lite sits in the same form factor has the current UniFi NanoHD access point, meaning it is compatible with those covers as well as the recessed mounting bracket. The 6 Lite supports 2×2 MIMO on 5GHz and 2.4GHz with a max rate of 1.2Gbps on the 5GHz band and 300mbps on the 2.4GHz band. The 6 Lite has the same power needs as the outgoing AC Lite, at 802.3af with Gigabit Ethernet.

UniFi 6 Long-Range

The 6 Long-Range AP supports much higher speeds and supports 4×4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz and 4×4 MIMO on 2.4GHz. MU-MIMO is best for supporting those higher density environments, which is where 802.11ax is designed to work best in, allowing multiple devices to talk and listen at the same time. It has a max rate of 2.4 Gbps on the 5GHz band and 600 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. The UniFi 6 Long-Range also requires more power than the outgoing AC LR model, now rated for 802.3at as opposed to 802.3af.

Both the 6 Lite and 6 LR will be available to pre-order on the 14th December.

Update 16/11/20 22:25 BST: Seems like Ubiquiti has added price information, the UniFi 6 Lite is $99 and the UniFi 6 Long-Range is $179.
