UK will be banning the use of Huawei equipment for 5G rollout next year

From September 2021, the UK will be banning the installation of any Huawei 5G equipment due to the company being a “high risk vendor” and this is stemming from pressure from the US.

The news came today from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport section of the UK government, and they are looking to remove Huawei from any future network rollouts and going forward, equipment from Nokia and Ericsson will be used instead.

“Today I am setting out a clear path for the complete removal of high risk vendors from our 5G networks. This will be done through new and unprecedented powers to identify and ban telecoms equipment which poses a threat to our national security.”

Digital Secretary, Oliver Dowden

For any equipment that is already installed, those will also need to be removed too, by 2027. Naturally, Huawei has asked the UK Government to not go ahead with this, suggesting that this move is:

“motivated by US perceptions of Huawei and not those of the UK”

This decision is a bit different to what the Government said earlier this year, when it stated that it wouldn’t give into pressure from the US to ban Huawei equipment.
