Xiaomi has been selling its highly successful SU7 electric saloon car in China, which was announced in December 2023 and has been on sale since March 2024. The Chinese tech company already has high ambitions, after selling 100,000 units between March and November 2024.
After only being on sale in China for less than twelve months, Xiaomi wants to start selling in other countries. According to 36Kr, the company is already laying the groundwork for sales teams, project managers and after sales staff. Again, according to 36Kr, Xiaomi will be carrying out smaller scale sales operations of cars in various markets, to gauge how customers react.
Back in the summer, Xiaomi shipped two examples of the SU7 to France and displayed it in public as part of an exhibition in Paris. At the time, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun was questioned whether or not the company would sell cars in Europe. He said that yes, it would sell cars in Europe, before 2030.
When Chinese cars are sold in Europe and the UK, the price that they are sold for in China is never what they end up being. Take for example, the GWM Ora 03 (formally known as the Funky Cat and the Good Cat in China). This little car in China sells for RMB 107,800, which works out at just £11,637. The car sold in China is slightly different, but around 90% of it is the same. However, once it makes its way to the UK, it costs over £30,000.
What we don't know, is how much Xiaomi would be able to sell the SU7 for in the UK. In China it starts at 215,900 yuan, which comes in at only £23,317. The other EV on sale in the UK that are even near that price is the Hyundai Inster, which looks great - but isn't in the same league as the SU7. Unfortunately, it might be over £30,000, maybe even near £40,000 when brought to the UK. However, this remains to be seen.
