Phillips introduced the original Hue Bridge back in 2012, at the same the company released the Hue line of light bulbs and now eight years later, Phillips has announced that on the 30th April 2020 the first generation hub will lose access to the internet and to any connected services that it works with currently.

The first generation hub currently works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa but not Apple HomeKit. On the 30th April these services will no longer work, however the local app will if you’re on the same home network. You will need the Philips Hue Bridge v1 app, however.

What should I do if I have a first generation hub?

If you’re not fussed about losing the integration between Hue and Alexa or Google Assistant and don’t need any remote access, then you will be fine with the first generation, but Phillips is recommending to upgrade to the second generation hub, the v2 model which does support Apple HomeKit along with the other services.

“After April 30, 2020 no software updates will be made available for the Hue Bridge v1 and compatibility with our online services will be terminated at that time. The Hue Bridge v1 can be only controlled locally via the dedicated Philips Hue Bridge v1 app.”
