Apple’s director of ML has quit, due to company rules on returning to office work

Ian Goodfellow joined Apple back in 2019, he came from Google as one of their top AI employees at the time. When Goodfellow joined Apple he was appointed as director of machine learning. However, late last week he wrote an email to staff saying that he was resigning.

His letter detailed that he was indeed leaving Apple, mainly due to the company’s increasing rules on staff coming back to the office, following the COVID-19 pandemic, which of course as we all know forced people to work from home. Apple has outlined that it’ll require employees to work from the office at least one day per week by 11th April this year, then by 2nd May at least two days and then at least three days a week by 23rd May.

Goodfellow said in his email that, “I believe strongly that more flexibility would have been the best policy for my team.”

This also has not come from nowhere, employees having been saying this for a while and a group of them even wrote a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook stressing their views on working from home.
