Audi debuts TT RS Iconic Edition, the last version before the car is discontinued

Audi has today revealed what will be the swan-song for the iconic Audi TT. The all new TT RS Iconic Edition will be the last special edition for the car and will be available in very limited numbers only. The new car will be available sometime next year and will launching for the last few months that Audi will be making the TT for. Audi hasn’t yet explained what will happen to the TT going forward, or if why at the moment it chose to discontinue it. The reasoning is likely to do with cost cutting and getting ready for the future of EVs.

As to what will happen to the TT in the future remains to be seen. As it uses the VW Golf platform, Audi could repurpose it, or use the ID.3 base and make a full EV, but this is pure speculation at this point. The current third generation will be discontinued when the TT line as a whole turns 25, after the original concept was revealed way back in 1995 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

“The name of the Audi TT RS Coupé iconic edition says it all. The edition model is reminiscent of the iconic TT design language, which at the same time stands for courage and elegance in uncompromising form.”

Sebastian Grams – MD of Audi Sport

As for the TT RS Iconic Edition, only 100 are to be made worldwide and just 11 are destined for the UK market. This edition holds a big price jump over the standard TT RS, at £87,650. The engine and mechanics are left unchanged, no extra power here. The 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine drives all four wheels through a seven speed DSG and makes 395bhp and 354lb ft torque. 0-60mph is handled in 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 174mph.

The iconic engine won’t be gone immediately however. Once the TT is dropped from sale, the engine will still be used in the Audi RS3 and Audi RS Q3 going forward, for however long Audi keeps those models around.
