BMW announces brand new iX1, an all electric SUV with 272 miles of range

Yesterday, BMW revealed its latest all electric model, the new iX1, an all electric SUV with 272 miles of range. This launch follows on from the launch of the brand new X1 model which has some traditional combustion engines too. The new iX1 joins BMW’s ever growing electric car lineup, with now EV versions of the BMW 4 Series, BMW X3 and the BMW 7 Series now on sale.

BMW has said that the new iX1 is based on an all new architecture called FAAR, which is already in use with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and will be soon for the upcoming next generation Mini Countryman. The iX1 is replacing the i3, which is due to be discontinued very soon.

Powering the iX1 xDrive30 EV are two electric motors, which together provide 309bhp and 364lb ft of torque. The is enough to propel the car from 0-60mph in just 5.7 seconds. The battery sits under the floor of the car and has a usable capacity of 64.7kWh, giving it a respectable range of between 257 and 272 miles.

The new combustion powered X1 is due to go on sale here in the UK later this year in October, the iX1 will go on sale shortly afterwards.

Inside the iX1 and X1 have been updated, with the latest generation of the iDrive operating system with a large 10.7-inch infotainment screen as well as a 10.25-inch digital gauge screen for the driver.

When both versions of the car go on sale in the UK later this year, the combustion versions will start from £35,130. BMW has yet to release prices for the iX1.
