Earlier today, Twitter rolled out a new secondary verification badge for accounts that are of notable presence. According to Esther Crawford, who works at Twitter on “early stage products” – she said that the grey tick would be used for “government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.”

However, this has already been canned in some form, by Twitter CEO, Elon Musk. In a response to Marques Brownlee, Elon said this idea had been killed. This caused some confusion, but in reality what has happened is that this official label won’t be used for public figures, only for only for commercial entities for now.

The grey label was live earlier today for a few hours and has now been scaled back somewhat to only include companies and government officials. In response, Elon said that the “blue check will be the great leveler” and that “Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months.” The company will “keep what works and change what doesn’t.”

Be sure to stay tuned to the interface for all the goings on with Twitter during this time!
