Ford announces new extreme Mustang GTD

Ford has unveiled the all new, and extreme Mustang GTD. The new car is going to be Ford’s most powerful road car yet with more than 800bhp. The entire body will be made out of carbonfibre with a focus for track use. Production will start in late 2024 with a price from around $300,000 (£234,000) in the US. Some units are said to be coming to the UK, but just how many and how much is yet to be decided.

Ford is taking a serious track angle with the Mustang GTD, with a target of under seven minutes for a lap around the Nürburgring. If it manages that, it’ll be just as fast as full blown supercars from the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

“Mustang GTD shatters every preconceived notion of a supercar. This is a new approach for us. We didn’t engineer a road car for the track, we created a race car for the road. This is our company. We’re throwing down the gauntlet and saying ‘come and get it’. We’re comfortable putting everybody else on notice. I’ll take track time in a Mustang GTD against any other auto boss in their best road car.”

Jim Farley – Ford CEO

As mentioned, Ford has a target for over 800bhp, using a bespoke 5.2-litre V8 engine. It features dry sump, dual air inlets and a titanium active-valve exhaust system. Ford quotes a near 50:50 weight distribution and carbon fibre driveshaft.

It has 345mm wide rear tyres and 325mm wide front tyres and a 40mm lower ride height when used in track mode. The track itself is 100mm wider than the standard Mustang which should help its cornering and handling capabilities. Buyers can also choose from 20-inch aluminium or magnesium wheels, with the latter being used on the GT3 race car Mustang.

Ford has yet to reveal the weight of the Mustang GTD, but considering the body work is carbon fibre expect some impressive numbers.
