Google Home can now respond to multiple users

Google Home can now respond to multiple users

Google’s in home voice assistant was kind of late to the game, Amazon’s Echo speaker was certainly one of the first and is still the most socially known and most popular, but Google isn’t wasting any time to add new features, using it’s extensive background in AI to boost it along.

One large downfall of the Amazon Echo is it can’t support multiple accounts, meaning as a family orientated device it only really it useful for one member of the household, Google has released this and today Google Home now supports up to six accounts to log in and each user can access their own playlists, calendar appointments and more.

Google has achieved this by getting you teach the Assistant to recognise your voice, so when each family member interacts with Google Home – it will use their account accordingly. The wizard will get you to say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” a few times over to learn the characteristics of your voice.

Google says that this recognition only happens on the device and only takes a few milliseconds.

How do I set it up?

Google has published some instructions for this and the GIF below helps illustrate the steps needed also. But for this to work, make sure you’re running the latest version of the Google Home app. One of the cards on the screen will show “multi-user is available”. The link your account and then the app will walk you through learning your voice.

From there each user can then set their own preferences for weather, news or music choices.

Availability

At this point in time, US users can access this from today but the feature will be coming to the UK in a few months.
