iOS 18 will bring support for Adaptive Lighting to Matter lights

Earlier this week, The Verge reported that when iOS 18 comes out next month, Adaptive Lighting support will come to smart lights that work with Matter. Since Adaptive Lighting was debuted with iOS 14, it has offered a nice and easy way for lights to automatically adjust the colour temperature throughout the day, to help circadian rhythms.

However, when Matter was brought in, lights that work with Matter have had this feature omitted, most namely from Nanoleaf who have versions of its lights that work with Thread and some that work with Matter and Thread.

The lights that work with Matter do not have access to the HomeKit Adaptive Lighting feature. However, beta testers of iOS 18 have started to notice that Matter lights added to HomeKit, now have access to Adaptive Lighting.

The Verge spoke to Nanoleaf CEO, Gimmy Chu who confirmed that the company is indeed testing functionality of getting Adaptive Lighting to work with its line of Essentials Matter lights. He stated that: "For the past several months we’ve been doing extensive testing to ensure that the customers will have a great experience."

It is worth pointing out that this limitation hasn't been a fault of the device manufactuers such as Nanoleaf, it has been a limitation with the way Apple has designed things. Getting Adaptive Lighting to work with Matter until now has been impossible because Apple hasn't allowed it.
