Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam is going to be banning all combustion powered motorbikes from its city centre from 1st July 2026. The area affected will be anything inside of Ring Road 1, with the primary goal to seriously reduce air pollution.

Earlier this year in February, we reported that in Mumbai was considering banning all combustion vehicles from the city centre, with a look to extend it to surrounding areas. Then, in April Delhi was also going through the same decision process, again to reduce crippling air pollution.

According to the report from VietNamNet, the air pollution in Hanoi has been one of the worst in the world, with water quality also taking a hit.

From 1st July 2026, all combustion motorbikes and scooters will be banned from inside Ring Road 1. From 1st January 2028 this will extend to within Ring Road 1 and 2, but at the same time, ban private combustion cars from the same areas.

Looking ahead to 2030, Hanoi will further extend this to within Ring Road 3.

Hanoi is also going to be launching subsidies to help people move to electric motorbikes, with 450,000 petrol motorbikes currently in operation which need to be swapped out.

Additionally, Hanoi will start to ban all single-use plastic ban in restaurants, hotels, cafes, and eateries within Ring Road 1 starting in Q4 2025.
