Mercedes has announced it’ll become electric only by 2030

Mercedes has announced a new plan for the company in terms of electrification. Like a lot of car companies at the moment, Mercedes is looking to become and electric only car company in the near future, with plans for that to happen by 2030. Earlier this year, Jaguar announced that by 2025 it would become an electric only company.

Mercedes already has a number of pure EV vehicles on sale today, including the pictured EQA small SUV as well as the EQB and EQC SUVs, the EQS saloon and EQV van. To achieve a future of no combustion cars, the company will start by phasing out those models and any new platforms for new cars will be electric only by 2025 onwards.

“The EV shift is picking up speed – especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade. This step marks a profound reallocation of capital. By managing this faster transformation while safeguarding our profitability targets, we will ensure the enduring success of Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to our highly qualified and motivated workforce, I am convinced that we will be successful in this exciting new era.”

Ola Källenius – Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz CEO

Mercedes is also planning to build eight new Gigafactories and introduce the Plug & Charge network, similar to the hands free approach to the Tesla Supercharger network, with no payments needing to be done at the station.
