Mumbai is considering banning combustion vehicles

Mumbai, the financial hub and capital of India is considering banning all combustion vehicles from the city in an effort to help reduce air pollution. Earlier in January, the Bombay High Court published concerns about pollution in Mumbai and subsequent increasing traffic congestion.

"Vehicular emissions are a primary source of air pollution, and the current measures to control the number of vehicles and pollution in Mumbai are proving inadequate."

Maharashtra Government, 22nd Jan 2025

In late January, the state government of Maharashtra responded saying that a committee has been formed to study the feasibility and possibility of banning all petrol and diesel vehicles from the city of Mumbai, which would also cover the surrounding areas, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar.

According to a recent report from The Economic Times there were 2.9 million vehicles sold in the state of Maharashtra during 2024, with 254,000 of them going to Mumbai. Out of those 2.9 million, only 230,000 of them were electric. However, data for Mumbai specifically is not yet available.

In India, brands such as MG and Tata sell affordable electric cars.
