New refreshed Tesla Model S appears on online configurator

New refreshed Tesla Model S appears on online configurator

Brand new images of a redesigned Tesla Model S have appeared on the official online configurator today over on tesla.com, boasting an all new interior with landscape screen, redesigned dashboard with less buttons, new steering wheel and a screen in the rear for the passengers. The car has three large screens, one for the rear passengers which allows for gaming and controlling the new tri-zone climate system. The middle main infotainment screen is now landscape, marking a change from the portrait screen in the outgoing Model S and current Model X. This change should surely make software development easier going forward.

The new steering wheel has no stalks for wipers and indicators and is a U shape, which Tesla calls a “yoke” and is very similar to the one on the upcoming Roadster.

Like the outgoing Model S, the driver still has a binnacle screen for important information.

Tesla has added a new screen in the rear for the first time, allowing for backseat gaming, climate control and Tesla Arcade can work with wireless controllers now. Tesla also say that the car now has “Up to 10 teraflops of processing power.” Making sure that the sound in the car was obviously a priority it seems, as the new Model S now has 22 speakers with 960 watts of power and to make the ride even quieter with active noise cancelation using microphones.

New features on the inside are:

  1. Premium 22-speaker audio with active noise cancelling
  2. Multi-device music and media over Bluetooth®
  3. 17” center display, 12.3” driver’s display, and 8” second row display
  4. Gaming computer with 10 teraflops of processing power
  5. Wireless controller compatibility

On the outside of the car, it has been altered but with less extreme changes, the front bumper has a new splitter and new vents either side of the front add some aggressiveness, even on the non Plaid model.

The Tesla Model S now comes in three variants, Long Range, Plaid and a new Plaid+.

Long Range – $78,490 / £83,980, 412 miles range, 0-60mph 3.1 seconds, top speed 155mph.

Plaid – $118,490 / £110,980, 390 miles range, 0-60mph 1.99 seconds, top speed 200 mph, 1020bhp.

Plaid+ – $138,490 / £130,980, 520+ miles range, 0-60mph <1.99 seconds, top speed 200 mph, 1100+bhp.

Tesla has said deliveries to start in 2022.
