At the UK debut of the new BYD Sealion 7 earlier this week, the company revealed that its smallest electric car, the Seagull would be coming to the UK market in 2025. The car will need to be upgraded in a few ways before it can be sold in here, such as adding additional safety technology - but the good news is that it is at least making its way here.
We reported around two years ago when BYD debuted the Seagull in China, which is on sale from around the equivalent of £8,000. Around a year ago, BYD UK also said it is keen to have the Seagull for the UK market.
The main difference it'll have that we know about so far, is the name. In China it is known as the Seagull and in other markets, it is called the Dolphin Mini. For the UK, it'll be called the Dolphin Surf.
When BYD Executive Vice President, Stella Li spoke to Autocar at the event in Milton Keynes, she said that the Dolphin Surf might "not be the cheapest" on sale, but it would "be the best value".
If it costs around £15k-£18k that would stack it up well against the Dacia Spring as well as competing well with the Citroën ë-C3 and Fiat Grande Panda. However, BYD has not yet commented on how much it will end up being.
In BYD's home country of China, the Seagull has either a 30kWh or 38kWh battery pack. The 30kWh is good for 190 miles of range and the 38kWh with 252 miles, all based on the CLTC cycle.
BYD just launched the brand new Sealion 7 and this now means the company has seven models on sale in the UK, with six of them being fully electric.
