Volkswagen releases concept images of the California T7

The next generation of the iconic Volkswagen California is about to be revealed, at least in a concept form. Volkswagen will be unveiling the official concept of the California later this month on the 25th August at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon trade fair.

So far, we know that it’ll be based on the longer length version of the T7 Multivan, which is only offered as a plug-in hybrid currently. The two sketches you see in this article reveal traditional pop-top roof and two awnings, currently the 6.1 California only has the one awning. VW has also mentioned that the new bvehincle will have two sliding doors, how that’ll work logistically remains to be seen but this will fix an issue with the California when used in the right-hand drive markets, such as the UK as the sliding door is on the wrong side when pulling up to the pavement.

In the back, it is understood that most of it will be similar to the California 6.1, with a kitchen, including two hobs (fuel type not confirmed) and fridge as well and table and sink. What is brand new is the removable tablet, which will allow for control of the climate system, lighting and activating the camping mode. Currently, all of the non driving functionality is controlled using an over-head screen, which can be a pain to get to if you are in the roof for example.

The 6.1 California uses a diesel engine, whereas the Multivan based California is expected to use the same plug-in hybrid system which means a 1.4-litre petrol engine with 148bhp combined with an 114bhp electric motor, for a total of 215bhp.

The California line is produced by VW in Hanover, Germany and the new T7 California is expected to be produced on the same line. Production is understood to start next year with no word on price. However, the current model starts at £61,322 so we could expect it to start at a higher price.

Down the line, a fully electric California based on the ID.Buzz is due in 2025.
