Ford announces new electric Bronco, destined for China only

Ford Bronco Electric for the Chinese market

Earlier this week, Ford China released the first photos of the all-new and all-electric Bronco for the Chinese car market. When new cars are due to go on sale in China, the images and specifications get published online with the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) and this can ruin the announcement, so Ford has decided to release the photographs and specifications ahead of time, before the MIIT does.

The Bronco in China is actually already on sale and has been for a little while. It's pretty much the same as the combustion version thats sold in the US, but this new EV (and EREV) are more akin to the Bronco Sport, thats also sold in the US.

Ford will sell two versions of the 'Bronco New Energy' in China, one thats all-electric with a BYD battery pack and an extended range EV (EREV) which has a similar setup to what BYD does with the Seal U DM-i.

The electric Bronco uses a 105.4kWh battery pack, with two electric motors. The front produces 130kW (174HP) and the rear makes 202kW (270HP) and it has a range of 404 miles. Ford has said that with the integrated software, the Bronco will be able to route plan.

The other version is a EREV, which utilises a petrol engine, electric motors and a smaller battery pack. This version uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and a 43.7kWh battery pack. The front motor is 130kW (174HP) and the rear makes 180kW (241HP). Range is naturally more impressive on this model, with 137 miles on pure electric and with the petrol engine, that jumps up to 758 miles.

This new Bronco will be made in China by Jiangling Motors (JMC), Ford's joint venture partner in the country. In some regions, Ford simply sells rebadged versions of JMC cars.

At this stage, it isn't clear if Ford will decide to to sell this EV Bronco outside of China. The most sensible market would be Australia and New Zealand, as those markets do well for Chinese manufactured vehicles. Ford is due to launch the EV Bronco in China in Q4 2025
