Ubiquiti quietly refreshes the design of most EdgeMAX devices, cementing its future

For a while, it hasn't been fully clear what Ubiquiti has planned for the future of EdgeMAX.. The first piece of hardware launched within the UISP line of devices was the UISP Switch back in March 2022. This supposedly marked the end of EdgeOS which had, and still has very few updates - especially to its EdgeRouter line, with the switches receiving a bit more attention. Shortly after the UISP Switch was launched, Ubiquiti released a statement going over what it had planned for the UISP and EdgeMAX lines.

"We are aware of the collective concern that EdgeMAX products will be replaced with UISP, and we want to assure you that this is not the case. UISP hardware has been designed for seamless integration with our next-generation WISP products, as well as our UISP Application and UISP mobile app. EdgeOS will continue serving as a supplementary application for networks that require advanced routing features."

Ubiquiti, March 2022

So despite its age, Ubiquiti does remain committed to EdgeMAX, serving as a more advanced product line compared to the much newer UISP devices. Even though Ubiquiti said that UISP won't replace EdgeMAX, you can't help feeling this will happen eventually. The UISP Router and Switch moved from being only manageable via the UISP Application and now have their own GUI, can be used in standalone mode and have been gaining more advanced features. For now however, it seems that the EdgeMAX line is here to stay for a while longer as most of the devices have had their designs refreshed, including nearly all of the EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch models and the UISP Fiber OLT devices.

The designs are much simpler, removing the italics style of the EdgeMAX logo and are overall just a bit nicer. Like the other UISP devices, the UISP logo is displayed on the top in large font.

In the case of the EdgeRouter 6 PoE, the branding on the top has been toned down, port labelling such as eth0, eth1 etc has been removed and replaced with numbers as well as the bright shiny silver ports swapped out for a more muted look. Ubiquiti is also getting ready to launch EdgeOS 3.0 for the EdgeRouter devices with a revamped look. Although, it has been in beta for nine months.

The following devices look to have been redesigned:
