The current Volkswagen Golf wasn’t expected to stick around for that long, as it was well understood that VW was planning on replacing it with the ID.3 in the coming years. However, Volkswagen boss, Thomas Schafer has said that in the future, there is room for the all electric ID.3 and a future all electric Golf to co-exist. Schafer has said that the Golf will have an all electric model again with the current eighth-generation model set to be dropped near the end of the decade, in 2027 or 2028.

Schafer spoke to Autocar and said the following:

“There is a connection with VW and ID, and there is no need to cancel it. We have iconic brand names, Golf and GTI. It would be crazy to let them die and slip away. We will stick with the ID logic but iconic models will carry a name.”

He also mentioned that the Golf could be called ID Golf in the future and mentioned that not everything in the ID range uses numbers, such as the new ID. Buzz. By the sounds of things, the ID Golf could sit in-between and upcoming, smaller ID.2 and the larger ID.3. If anything, this can only be a good thing for more models in the lineup to cater to more price points, consumer preferences and range.
