With the new iPhone 6s, Apple introduced something called 3D Touch. To get to the point, the iPhone 6s can detect pressure now and this opens up a whole new way to use your iPhone. Apple is calling this “the next generation of Multi-Touch.” With the original iPhone the awe inspiring feature was the ability two swipe through the web and pinch to zoom your photos, this was revolutionary, even more so on the iPad.

What can I use 3D Touch for?

To get your head around the concept as it can become a bit confusing at first, is that 3D Touch is basically a right click for your phone, allowing quick actions and stream lining iOS and the processes. Also the reason this is called 3D Touch and not Force Touch is that unlike Force Touch, 3D Touch can detect the levels of pressure and this actually has a useful purpose.

Quick Actions which are when you press, not tap on a icon and you get a menu, so for the Camera app you get the option to take a selfie, take a video and more and this is genially faster if you remember to use it and it will with time become a natural way of using your iPhone.

Another use for 3D Touch is Peek and Pop which are used in Mail, Messages, Calendar and more. A soft press lets you “Peek” at a message or a link and quickly look at it, press harder and it takes you into the message to interact with it or launch Safari.

This is more than holding your thumb on the screen…

I still think, like with most features on the iPhone there is some confusion with how it actually works. This is more than just holding your finger on the screen, there is actual pressure sensors in this. This will also, like Touch ID make it’s way to more than just the iPhone and will become a standard and a widely used thing as more app developers build it into their apps.
